Salmon

Salmon is one of those foods that I am always trying to get my kids to eat. It is a really great source protein for growing bodies, not to mention an excellent way to get essential Omega-3 fatty acids or “healthy fats” into them. It’s no wonder salmon is known as brain food!

That all being said, it’s not always easy to get our little ones to eat salmon. Chicken nuggets, are a favourite but I’m going to share today my fool-proof recipe that will have the whole family begging you to make these crispy salmon nuggets time and time again!

Why You’ll Love This Easy Salmon Recipe!

So we know fish is good for us, but like I said before getting a fussy eater or even a non fussy child to eat a piece of salmon or other fresh fish in it’s natural form can be challenging to say the least!

But by turning them into these little crispy seasoned salmon pieces makes them slightly less daunting to kids who may already be familiar with things like fish fingers or chicken nuggets.

And by baking them in the oven, they make a healthier alternative to cooking them in a frying pan or deep fat fryer.

If you have an airfryer, you could even make them as air fryer salmon nuggets instead of baking in the oven!

Ingredients You Will Need For The Salmon Nuggets

  • skinless salmon fillets – I use fresh Norwegian salmon fillets cut into salmon cubes. You can use any type of salmon filets but remember to remove the salmon skin is not using skinless ones!
  • plain flour
  • eggs
  • panko breadcrumbs – this makes the nuggets super crispy!
  • dried mixed herbs
  • salt & pepper

Easy Recipe

This recipe is also really easy to make. It literally takes 4-5 minutes to prep the nuggets and just 12 minutes to bake in the oven.

I usually chop some baby potatoes into wedges and chuck them into the oven at the same time to cook.

So simple and a complete meal ready in less than 20 minutes! This easy dinner would be perfect for a busy mid-week meal.

And if your kids are still dubious, then maybe try serving with some sort of dipping sauce or their favorite sauce that they are already familiar with like some of the following options:

  • ketchup
  • tartar sauce
  • soy sauce
  • mayonnaise

Or just serve with lemon wedges on the side and let them squeeze on their own lemon juice!

You can also get the kids involved in making them. My daughter loves to help me and it’s great to see her get enthusiastic about her food!

Salmon Nugget Storage Instructions

These nuggets are great for batch cooking meaning you can have them prepped and ready to go when you need them. The best and easiest way to to do this is to freeze them after making them but before cooking them.

After Step 3 in the method section, add the nuggets to a tray or plate in a single layer. Freeze for a couple of hours until they are hard and then transfer into a freezer bag or airtight container where they will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months.

If cooking from frozen, add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

FAQs

Why is my salmon not getting crispy? ›

If you skimp on oil, the skin will just burn instead of going golden, and it really won't be that crispy. Pat dry + optional fridge dry – Crispy skin requires dry skin, so pat it dry with a paper towel. If time permits, leave the salmon skin side up in the fridge for an hour or so.

How do you make salmon skin crispy without overcooking? ›

Though you want fairly high heat at the start, cooking at that temperature the entire time will lead to the salmon overcooking on its outer layers, which can cause it to turn chalky and leak unsightly white albumen. So, just before adding the fish, lower the heat under the pan to medium-low.

How do I get my kids to eat salmon? ›

Sometimes adding a slight sweetness to fish can make it even more appealing to children. Flavour exploration is so important in a child's food journey, so adding something like grated apple to a recipe, or a sweet dipping sauce is a good way to entice them to discover new tastes.

How do restaurants get salmon so crispy? ›

The requirements are few: Dry fillets: Less moisture allows for maximum crisping and a reduction in splatter. Pat dry on all sides just before cooking. Salt and pepper: Simple seasoning is all you need to let the natural flavor of the salmon shine.

What to season salmon with? ›

Salmon does not need much seasoning to be flavorful. You can season it with just salt and black pepper or with a combination of lemon juice, fresh herbs, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, butter, minced garlic, and any other flavors you desire. 3. Dry the salmon to ensure crispy skin.

Why is my baked salmon so dry? ›

If you think you don't like salmon, chances are high that you're overcooking it. Overcooked salmon is super-firm and opaque orange all the way through and whether it's farm-raised or wild, it will be dry, chalky, and, frankly, a waste of your hard-earned cash.

Why is my baked salmon soggy? ›

Cooked salmon should be flaky but still moist. If the salmon appears mushy or falls apart, it is likely overcooked.

Should salmon be crispy skin side up or down? ›

So, you want skin that is super crisp and flavorful, just as you would want with chicken. Starting your salmon skin-side down, and cooking it until it is well rendered, lightly browned, and crisp, and then turning the salmon to finish the cooking, will make for a terrific dining experience.

Can you marinate salmon and still get crispy skin? ›

The elements of an oil-based marinade (oil, acid, and flavor enhancers) slightly soften the proteins in the salmon in addition to sealing in moisture. Meanwhile, the extra fat helps the skin crisp up from within. It's that simple!

Is salmon good for picky eaters? ›

There are so many reasons to love salmon. Not only is this healthy fish versatile (we're just as likely to toss it on the grill as we are to throw it in the oven), but it cooks up quick—in a matter of minutes—and taste great.

How to get picky eaters to eat fish? ›

Kids love fried everything, and fried fish is probably a good way to start them eating fish. Air frying is a great alternative to deep frying, and homemade fish cakes and fish sticks with homemade tartar and co*cktail sauces might win them over. Let the kids help prepare the meal, get their hands in it so to speak.

How do you eat salmon for people who don't like salmon? ›

Mix honey with freshly grated ginger, sesame oil and sesame seeds, plus soy sauce — a combination that one salmon-hater now serves weekly. Bake or pan-sear your salmon first and brush on your glaze near the end. Be careful not to overcook your filets.

How do you get crispy skin on frozen salmon? ›

Flip the salmon so it's skin-side down, and season the flesh side generously with salt, pepper and any other spices you'd like. Cover the skillet with a lid to help trap heat and steam the salmon so it cooks through. While it's steaming, you want the skin against the hot pan so it crisps up instead of getting soggy.

Do people eat crispy salmon skin? ›

“The decision to indulge in salmon skin boils down to personal preference and how it's prepared,” Bryan tells Southern Living. “When cooked just right, it can offer a crispiness and an extra layer of flavor to your meal. That being said, some people will probably want to forgo it due to its distinct 'fishy' taste.”
