Easy One Pot Spaghetti Recipe

One pot pasta recipes are perfect for a quick dinner on busy weeknights because they're quick, easy, kid friendly, and you only have one pan to wash, so fewer dishes to do. I love one pot meals!

Once you see how easy it is to cook spaghetti directly in the sauce, you'll never want to cook it any other way! You cook the spaghetti in the sauce, not boiling water.

I came up with this one-pot spaghetti recipe after a few of you wrote in asking for a stove top version of my Instant Pot Spaghetti and Meat Sauce.

Spaghetti snobs (I used to be one) may disagree, but believe me, this one-pot meal is a great recipe that saves you a few steps, and it works! And sometimes, we just need easy comfort food. All you need to make this easy spaghetti dinner is a large pot or large Dutch oven -- and a stove!

Serve spaghetti and meat sauce with a green salad and crusty bread or garlic bread, for a complete meal in minutes!

Dutch Oven Spaghetti Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients for this Dutch oven spaghetti recipe. You can find them in your grocery store:

  • Yellow onion-- or white onion, chopped
  • Olive oil -- to cook the onion
  • Lean ground beef -- no draining needed!
  • Spaghetti -- 16 ounces. Break spaghetti noodles in half so they cook evenly
  • Spaghetti sauce -- I love Rao's marinara sauce, but any brand works
  • Diced tomatoes -- adds texture and additional liquid without watering down the sauce
  • Water or beef broth -- to help cook the pasta
  • Seasonings -- Italian seasoning, sea salt, garlic powder, ground black pepper and optional red pepper flakes

How to Make One Pot Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

First, you cook the onions in some olive oil over medium heat until they're slightly soft, and then, you brown your ground beef.

There's no need to cook the ground meat all the way because it will finish cooking with the pasta.

If there's a lot of grease, you can drain it. I use lean ground beef, so I usually skip this step. Next, season the meat, and you're ready for the pasta.

You'll need to break the uncooked spaghetti in half so that it cooks evenly and doesn't clump together.

Then, add your uncooked spaghetti to the pot, and pour in spaghetti sauce, diced tomatoes and water. Cook over medium-high heat until sauce starts to boil. Then, reduce heat to medium while the pasta cooks.

If you want even more flavor for your spaghetti, you can use beef broth or chicken broth instead of water. Or, you can add a little red wine to really take this spaghetti dinner to the next level!

You do need to keep an eye on the pasta and stir frequently so that the spaghetti doesn't clump together or stick to the bottom of the pot.

Cook Time

Cook pasta until al dente, which is about 12 to 15 minutes. Total cooking time for this recipe is about 30 minutes, including time to cook the ground meat.

As soon as the pasta is cooked al dente or to your liking, you're done!

I like to sprinkle a little grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley over the top before serving. Doesn't this look gorgeous?!

I use kitchen tongs to lift the spaghetti out of the pot directly to people's plates. Honestly, you guys, this one pot spaghetti is a lifesaver on busy days!

My kids absolutely love this flavorful spaghetti with meat sauce. It has amazing flavor, and it works so well for feeding them before they head off to football or soccer or dance. This is also a great Dutch oven recipe for camping!

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Store leftover spaghetti in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should last for 3 to 4 days. Reheat cold spaghetti in the microwave or on the stove until hot and steaming. You may need to add a little more pasta sauce when reheating.

The leftovers heat up well, and you can freeze larger amounts for later. Just place pasta in freezer safe containers or zip top bags, and use within 3 months for best taste.

Substitutions and Variations

Use Italian sausage in place of ground beef or use half sausage half beef. You can use your favorite pasta shape in place of spaghetti noodles. Gluten free pasta works here.

Use homemade sauce (try my homemade spaghetti sauce)or your favorite brand of jar sauce and your favorite spices. Fresh herbs like basil add wonderful flavor. You can also add more marinara sauce or tomato sauce and omit the diced tomatoes.

Sub ½ cup red wine for ½ cup water or broth for extra flavor. Add fresh veggies like fresh spinach, bell pepper, kale, zucchini or broccoli. This is a great way to sneak more veggies into your kids' meals.

For a low fat option, use ground turkey. You can also leave the meat out for vegetarian pasta.

Recipe Tips

Note -- This spaghetti recipe calls for 16 ounces of spaghetti -- a regular package, as opposed to 8 ounces. It makes a lot of pasta, but it's perfect for leftovers, and it freezes well for later -- easy meal prep!

Break spaghetti noodles in half so they don't clump together. Also, stir the pasta frequently as it cooks.

This recipe works best with 24-26 oz jar of spaghetti sauce. If you are using a larger jar of sauce, you may want to skip the can of tomatoes.

FAQs

Can you put uncooked noodles in spaghetti sauce? ›

By skipping the separate boiling of the pasta and instead adding the dried noodles straight to the sauce, you can make a weeknight-friendly meal in just one pot. Bonus: It makes the pasta more flavorful, too.

Should you cook ground beef before adding to spaghetti sauce? ›

The ground beef should be cooked separately before adding it to the spaghetti sauce. By cooking it separately, you have better control over the browning process and can ensure that it cooks evenly. Once the ground beef is fully cooked, drain any excess grease and then add it to your simmering spaghetti sauce.

What to add to store bought spaghetti sauce to make it taste homemade? ›

Add fresh herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, bay leaf), and let them simmer to give a punch of fresh flavor.

Do you cook the meat before putting it in spaghetti sauce? ›

Combine ground beef, onion, garlic, and green pepper in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until meat is browned and crumbly and vegetables are tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain grease. Stir diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste into the pan.

Should you simmer spaghetti sauce covered or uncovered? ›

To thicken a soup, stew, or sauce, leaving the lid uncovered is ideal. "It must be off, or semi-covered, if you are slowing down the reduction process," says Stephen Chavez, chef-instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education.

Do you rinse spaghetti before adding sauce? ›

Do Not Rinse. Pasta should never, ever be rinsed for a warm dish. The starch in the water is what helps the sauce adhere to your pasta. The only time you should ever rinse your pasta is when you are going to use it in a cold dish like a pasta salad or when you are not going to use it immediately.

What does adding butter to tomato sauce do? ›

Add butter

Yes, that's right. Toss in a few tablespoons of butter, and let it melt into the sauce. If you've never tried it before, it might seem strange, but a little butter makes tomato sauce rich and smooth, and also balances out too much acidity, which is common in jarred sauces.

How much spaghetti sauce for 1 pound of ground beef? ›

A weeknight sauce can have a pound of ground beef in 6 cups of sauce *think chili). You can substitute tuna, shrimp or clams; make vegetarian white sauces like Alfredo or Primavera, or add bacon to either. For a simple side dish, pasta can be tossed with olive oil and parmesan.

How do you deepen the flavor of spaghetti sauce? ›

Tossing in strips of basil, a sprig of thyme or some oregano can take your sauce to the next level. Although fresh herbs might pop a bit more, dried herbs and spices can work just as well. Sprinkling in some red pepper flakes, a pinch of parsley and a dash of salt and pepper can liven up your jarred pasta sauce.

What gives spaghetti sauce more flavor? ›

Add Vegetables

A "battuto" (the Italian term for a finely minced mirepoix of onions, celery, and carrots) is a great place to start, but you can also try sautéed mushrooms, which will add a dose of umami, or fresh fennel, which will add complexity.

How much spaghetti noodles for 1 pound of meat? ›

1 lb ground beef 1 jar spaghetti sauce 16oz spaghetti noodles 1 jar Alfredo sauce 8oz block Mozzarella cheese SPG Italian seasoning Brown 1lb ground beef seasoning with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Bring a pot to a boil and add 16oz spaghetti, cooking to Al dente(boil around 8-9 min).

Can you put uncooked spaghetti in sauce to cook? ›

By adding uncooked noodles and a little extra liquid into the sauce, you end up with a simple and delicious meal made in just one pot. It's really important to make sure there's enough extra liquid added to your sauce so the spaghetti cooks properly. Not enough, and you'll have crunchy spaghetti.

Do you drain hamburger meat before adding spaghetti sauce? ›

Drain the meat to avoid a greasy pasta sauce. Add in the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Bring to a low boil and then turn heat down to medium low and let it simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, longer if you can. If it starts to boil and spit sauce, just turn the heat down.

Can I cook dry pasta in the sauce? ›

Cooking pasta in the sauce instead of in boiling water will increase the amount of time it takes to cook through. It's a good technique to use if you want to delay serving your pasta for a few minutes. Make sure to keep the sauce thinned out with pasta water as the pasta finishes cooking if you use this method.

Can you cook undercooked pasta in sauce? ›

If you've already added the sauce to it, don't fret -- you can still add it back onto the stove. In fact, it actually pays to cook pasta directly in the sauce, so just view it as part of the culinary process. Pour it back into a pot and add some water to prevent the sauce from thickening too much.

Why does my spaghetti sauce get watery when I put it on the pasta? ›

This could happen when you add too much pasta water into your sauce, and you accidentally drown the thick sauce with the starchy water (happens to the best of us). I find that this happens to me most often when I'm making quick sauces, like a meat sauce or light marinara that hasn't had the time to simmer.

Do you have to cook pasta before baking? ›

The pasta just needs to absorb water to cook — but it doesn't have to be through boiling. In the Serious Eats piece, J. Kenji López-Alt explains the reasoning behind cooking your pasta before baking it: Pasta needs to absorb about 80% of its own weight in water in order to cook through.
