Howard Hunt, shown in this 1992 photo, was involved in the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba in 196L with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report in Washington. But Bunning's support for Northup "just tells me how serious Fletcher's problems really are," Duffy said. "The protocol one might expect, of staying on the sidelines or endorsing the incumbent, has been put aside," she said. No other Kentucky member of Congress has followed Bunning's lead.

"Probably what everybody is waiting for is the inevitable poll," Duffy said. Jackson said that Bunning's word is respected, especially among primary voters. "It signals to people that it's OK to be for Anne Northup in this race," he said. Bunning noted to reporters yesterday that Northup lost her House race in November to Democrat John Yarmuth by 6,000 votes. The senator contrasted that with his own re-election in 2004, when he lost Jefferson County by 62,000 votes.

"So that's got to give you an indication of her appeal to a broad spectrum of the electorate," he said. Reporter James R. Carroll can be reached at (202) 906-8141. "It means a lot," said Ted Jackson, a Louisville political consultant and an adviser to Northup's campaign. "A lot of voters will try to be sorting this out and looking for some authority within the party to confirm Fletcher's problems." But some analysts are doubtful Bunning's backing will have an impact.

Joe Gershtenson, assistant professor of politics at Eastern Kentucky University, said Bunning's nod is less important than the power of incumbency, records on the issues, fundraising and commercials. "It's kind of a brief, fleeting blip on the radar," Gershtenson said. An endorsem*nt from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, would have greater impact, he said. "McConnell is recognized as more of a figure in the Republican Party than is Bunning," Gershtenson said. And McConnell "has a bigger following within the party apparatus and in the electorate." McConnell has said he will remain neutral.

However, he did call Northup "formidable" and a candidate who could win the election. The typical voter doesn't pay a lot of attention to endorsem*nts, said Jennifer Duffy, Senate analyst Senator has backed her run for governor By James R. Carroll The Courier-Journal WASHINGTON Anne Northup is a "true conservative" who can appeal to minorities, women, independents and even Democrats in the race to be Kentucky's governor, U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning said yesterday.

That potentially broad base of support is one reason he endorsed her on Monday, the Kentucky Republican told reporters during a morning conference call. "Anne is a true conservative who is able to appeal to voters even in the most liberal part of the state," Bunning said, referring to Louisville, which makes up the 3rd Congressional District. Northup, a Republican, represented the district in the U.S. House for five terms. Others in the primary are Gov.

Ernie Fletcher and Paducah businessman Billy Harper. The filing deadline is Jan. 30. Northup and her allies have embraced Bunning's endorsem*nt. Watergate's E.

Howard Hunt dies 1972 break-in led to Nixon's resignation Associated Press MIAMI E. Howard Hunt, who helped organize the Watergate break-in, leading to the greatest scandal in American political history and the downfall of President Richard Nixon, died yesterday. He was 88. Hunt died at a Miami hospital after a lengthy bout with pneumonia, according to his son Austin Hunt. The elder Hunt was many things: World War soldier, CIA officer, organizer of both a Guatemalan coup and the botched Bay of Pigs invasion, and author of more than 80 books.

Yet the bulk of his fame and notoriety came from the one thing he insisted he wasn't a Watergate burglar. "I will always be called a Watergate burglar, even though I was never in the damn place," Hunt told The Miami Herald in 1997. While working for the CIA, Hunt recruited four of the five actual burglars Bernard Barker, Virgilio Gonzalez, Rolando Eugenio Martinez and Frank Stur-gis, all of whom had worked for Hunt a decade earlier in the Bay of Pigs invasion. "According to street gossip both in Washington and Miami, Mr. Castro (Cuban President Fidel Castro) had been making substantial contributions to the McGovern campaign," Hunt told CNN in February 1992.

"And the idea was that somewhere in the books of the Democratic National Committee those illicit funds would be found." The idea was wrong, and the fallout escalated into a huge political scandal. Nixon resigned on Aug. 9, 1974. Twenty-five men were sent to prison for their involvement in the botched plan. "I had always assumed, working for the CIA for so many years, that anything the White House wanted done was the law of the land," Hunt told People magazine for its May 20, 1974, issue.

"I viewed this like any other mission. It just happened to take place inside this country." The Hunt recruits and James W. McCord security director for the Committee for the Re-election of the President, were arrested June 17, 1972, at the Watergate office building. One of the burglars was found to have Hunt's White House phone number. Hunt and fellow operative G.

Gordon Liddy, along with the five arrested at the Watergate, were indicted. Hunt and his recruits pleaded guilty in January 1973, and McCord and Liddy were found guilty. Hunt also was involved in organizing an event that foreshadowed Watergate: the burglary of the office of the Beverly Hills psychiatrist treating Daniel Ells-berg, the defense analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers, published in 1971. Hunt and Liddy broke into Ellsberg's office to gain information about him The break-in was revealed during the 1973 espionage trial of Ellsberg and co-defendant Anthony Russo, and led to the dismissal of the case because of government misconduct. Everette Howard Hunt was born Oct.

9, 1918, in Hamburg, NY. He graduated from Brown University in 1940 and was commissioned as a Naval Reserve officer the following year. He served as a destroyer gunnery officer, was injured at sea and was honorably discharged. From 1949 through 1970 he worked for the CIA. He was involved in its operation that overthrew Jacobo Arbenz as Guatemala's president in 1954, plus the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961.

Hunt spent his final years in a modest home in Miami's Biscayne Park neighborhood with his second wife, Laura Martin Hunt. Besides his wife, Hunt is survived by six children. Pence won't seek elective office this year By Tom Loftus The Courier-Journal FRANKFORT, Ky. Lt. Gov.

Steve Pence said yesterday that he will not run for office this year. "I received a lot of encouragement to run for governor or attorney general," Pence said in an interview. "But I've decided to return to practice law, and maybe some other opportunities in the private sector." Pence, 53, is a Louisville Republican elected on a ticket with Gov. Ernie Fletcher in 2003. But last former U.S.

attorney he did not view that office as "a move forward for me." He said that "mostly, for personal and family reasons, that job is not a good fit for me right now. I think it's healthy for people in public office to step out and catch their breath now and then." He did not rule out a future candidacy. "If the right office comes open at the right time for me, I may want to serve again," he said. Reporter Tom Loftus can be reached at (502) 875-5136. May he announced he would not seek re-election this year as Fletcher's running mate, citing problems with the way the governor responded to an investigation of administration hiring practices.

Pence said he had considered running for governor because Republicans needed an alternative to Fletcher. But former U.S. Rep. Anne Northup of Louisville who filed last week for governor provides that alternative, he said. Pence said he received broad encouragement within the party to run for attorney general, but as a Obituaries Find obituaries online at vww.courier-journaLcom mother, Betty Bowen.
