If you fall into one of the categories below, you may qualify for the free NHS flu vaccination.
- If you are 65 years old and over
- If you are between 18-64 years old and are in one of the at-risk categories for flu
The flu jab bookings are now closed. Once your flu jab is booked, you will be emailed with your appointment information.
Why have the flu jab?
Catching the flu can be very serious for many people and potentially lead to hospitalisation or, in some cases, death. Getting the vaccination:
- gives you the best protection against flu
- usually means milder symptoms for those who have been vaccinated but catch the virus
- helps protect you, your family and the most vulnerable in our communities
- lowers your risk of developing serious complications for those who are at high risk of catching the virus
How long does the flu jab last?
The changing flu strains means the previous year’s vaccine may not protect you against a different variant. Over time, protection from the flu jab gradually decreases, so an annual pharmacy flu vaccination is essential to provide optimal protection.

How effective is the flu vaccine?
The flu jab is designed to protect you against the most common types of flu viruses. It doesn’t guarantee that you won’t catch the flu, but it does lower your risk and it means that if you do get the infection, it is likely to be milder and shorter lasting.
Bear in mind that it usually takes 2 weeks before the vaccine fully takes effect.
Who can’t get the flu vaccine?
Most people are able to have flu jabs, but there are some people who should avoid this type of vaccination. This includes those who have had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose of the jab. As some flu vaccines contain egg, you should also get advice from a GP or pharmacist if you have an egg allergy.
If you have a high temperature, you should wait until you are feeling better before you arrange your flu vaccine.
What are the side effects of the flu vaccine?
Common side effects of this vaccine include:
- A slightly elevated temperature
- Body aches
- Pain or tenderness at the site of the infection
These effects are usually mild and get better within 2 days.
The flu vaccinations used in the UK don’t contain any live flu viruses, so they can’t give you the infection.

What are the symptoms of flu?
Flu symptoms can present and develop very quickly. The symptoms include:
- a sudden high temperature of 38C or above
- an aching body
- feeling exhausted or tired
- sore throat
- dry cough
- headache
- trouble sleeping
- loss of appetite
- diarrhoea or stomach pain
- feeling sick or vomiting
Can a pharmacist help with flu?
Yes, the NHS recommends that you speak to your pharmacist, who will offer prevention advice and recommend flu remedies if required. The pharmacy flu vaccination service is available at all Day Lewis pharmacies. Please speak to your local Day Lewis pharmacy for more information.
